بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

2.26

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا یَسْتَحْیٖۤ اَنْ یَّضْرِبَ مَثَلًا مَّا بَعُوْضَةً فَمَا فَوْقَهَاؕ-فَاَمَّا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا فَیَعْلَمُوْنَ اَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَّبِّهِمْۚ-وَ اَمَّا الَّذِیْنَ كَفَرُوْا فَیَقُوْلُوْنَ مَا ذَاۤ اَرَادَ اللّٰهُ بِهٰذَا مَثَلًاۘ-یُضِلُّ بِهٖ كَثِیْرًاۙ-وَّ یَهْدِیْ بِهٖ كَثِیْرًاؕ-وَ مَا یُضِلُّ بِهٖۤ اِلَّا الْفٰسِقِیْنَۙ (26)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

Allah is not shy of stating anything[1] in relating an example, whether it is ˹even˺ a mosquito or above that. In any case, the believers know that this is the truth from their Lord, and as for the disbelievers, they say, “What did Allah mean by this example?” Allah misguides many through it, and He guides many through it;[2] and with it, He only misguides the disobedient.

Commentary

Modesty (hayā’) can be defined as a feeling which deters one from an action due to fear of humiliation—this meaning obviously does not apply to Allah Almighty, hence the expression here means “not refraining from stating examples.”

The fundamental purpose of the Quran is guidance. However, many become misguided due to rejecting, mocking, or misinterpreting the Quran; this is the contextual understanding of misguidance through the Quran.
